Phil Norman, 80 of Hayes, died Wednesday, February 27, 2008, at the Hospice House in Rapid City.
Services were held Tuesday, March 4, at the First United Methodist Church in Ft. Pierre with burial at the Scotty Philip Cemetery.
Philip Leo Norman was born on July 29, 1927, in Pierre to Roy and Edith (Fackelman) Norman. He was raised in rural Stanley County where he attended rural grade school before graduating from Pierre High School in 1945.
He married Maxine Pugh in 1947. They made their home and raised their six children in the Hayes area where Phil and Maxine farmed and ranched. Phil was always a man who enjoyed helping others and was very active in trying to improve his community. He was a member of the Kirley Hall Board and was instrumental with the new hall design. He loved his roots and the community of Hayes.
He was involved with 4-Corners Baseball, was a 4-Corners Lighted Field Association member and director, Hiram Lodge #123, 33º Scottish Rite Mason, Naja Temple Shrine, Ft. Pierre Eastern Star #90, Midwest Co-op director, United Methodist Church member and trustee, ASCS member, Kirley Rifle Club member and school board member. Phil enjoyed baseball, prairie dog and deer hunting, bowling, golfing, rodeos, dancing and cards.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Maxine; their children, Loni (Charles) Draper, Marcia (Bill) Shell, Keith (Linda) Norman, Bruce (Mary) Norman, Marva Lee (David) Vogel and Mitchell (Corinne) Norman; 15 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Gaylord Norman; one sister, Velma Wilder; and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and Aunt Lorene.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Albert; one sister, Regina Stoeser; and sister-in-law, Alice Norman.
