Allan D. Fonken of Hayden, Idaho, passed away on Feb. 7, 2023, at the age of 81, with his children by his side. He was born Feb. 28, 1941, to Doretta A. (Koch) and John W. Fonken in Manning, Iowa. Al grew up on his family's farm and graduated from Manning High School. He then graduated with a degree in Forestry from Iowa State University. He married his high school sweetheart, Susan Rowedder, at the age of 21. Although they divorced 24 years later, they remained friends for life.

Al worked in forestry and land management for over 50 years and lived in the Coeur d'Alene/Hayden area for 56 years. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hiker, backpacker and hunter. He was active in many sports throughout his life and continued playing competitive volleyball into his 70s. He was very involved in the Český Fousek North America club (formerly Bohemian Wirehaired Pointing Griffon Club) and had four beloved canine companions from the breed over the past 40 years.

Al is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Paul Cloutier, and grandchildren Christian and Gabrielle of Burr Ridge, Ill.; his son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Kirsten Fonken, and grandchildren Calvin and Nicholas of Seattle, Wash.; and many friends.

No services are planned, but Al's ashes will be scattered from a mountaintop in North Idaho, his favorite place to be. Belltower Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
