Joyce was born on June 15, 1946, in Eldora, Iowa, the daughter of August and Millie (Gerloff) Abbas. She grew up on a farm north of Holland, Iowa, where she lived until she moved to Grundy Center in 1979. She graduated from Grundy Center High School in 1964.
Following high school, Joyce worked at the Spokesman Press for 13 years. She then worked for 26 years for Grundy County Public Health and the Grundy County Home Health. She finished her working career after six years of working in the food service department at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital.
In January 2020, Joyce moved to memory care at Arlington Place in Grundy Center. In the three years she spent at Arlington Place, she enjoyed making new friends, participating in the many activities such as Music Speaks and Friday Bingo, and listening the musicians who would visit.
Joyce was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center.
Surviving are her sister and brother-in-law, Judy and David Primus, Steamboat Rock, Iowa; two nieces, Melissa Primus and Delite Primus (Ann Perri); and one nephew, Calvin Primus.
She was preceded in death by her parents and by her niece Becky Primus.
