Willem came to America with his parents Willem Sr. and Johanna van der Meidjen (Van der Meide) and five siblings aboard the ship Amiticia that sailed from Rotterdam to New York. His family settled in Pella, Iowa. Willem appears on the August 1860 census with his parents at the age of 20. The name on the census is spelled the old Dutch way of "Visfer". A citation in Ancestry states that Willem died in 1860.
