Walter J. "Smitty" Smith, 80, died in his home at 1738 Eastbrook Road.

Parents: Walter L. and Mary Micco Smith.

Wife: Dorothy Sylvester, married on Nov. 27, 1948.

He retired part owner of Sylvester's Dairy. He later served as a tipstaff at the Lawrence County Government Center and eventually was superintendent of maintenance at the former Hill View Manor. He enjoyed golf and was a great football fan. He served as an announcer for Laurel High School football games for 40 years. Above all, he loved his family deeply, especially his grandchildren. He was a member of St. Vitus Church where he served as lector for many years, taught CCD classes and was past president of its Holy Name Society. He was also past president of the Lawrence County Deanery of Holy Name Societies.

Relatives: a daughter and son-in-law, Mimi and Tom Havranek of New Castle; a son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Pia Smith of Sewickley; a half sister, Betty Sands of New Castle; and six grandchildren, Kyrie Smith, Sal Smith, Jerad Smith, Vincent Smith, Regina Havranek and Thomas Havranek. He was preceded in death by two half brothers, Charles Tuscano and John Tuscano.
