Retired U.S. Navy Cmdr. James J. McGrath, 70, died April 26, 1995, at Providence Alaska Medical Center following a lengthy illness. Burial with full military honors was held at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va. A Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church with the Rev. Dan Hebert officiating.
Cmdr. McGrath was born Feb. 17, 1925, in Boston. He graduated from Hyde Park High School in Hyde Park, Mass., received his B.S. and M.A. degrees from Suffolk University, M.S. degree from State University of New York Albany, and Ed.S. from the University of Alaska Anchorage. He also attended the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School and the Air War College. Cmdr. McGrath served his country in three wars during a 30-year naval career which began with his enlistment in the Navy at age 17. He was particularly proud of his service in the Armed Guard during World War II. Twenty-two ship assignments included the USS Kewaydin (ATA 213), USS Lindenwald (LSD-6), USS Ticonderoga (CVA-14), USS Carpenter (DD825), and ASWGRU 3 Staff. He commanded the USS Walker (DD517) with the Pacific Fleet during the Vietnam War and the Navy Recruiting Station, Des Moines, Iowa. Cmdr. McGrath was associate professor of naval science at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Chief Inspector Military Sealift Command Far East, and came to Alaska in 1969 to Headquarters Alaskan Command. He earned 16 medals/ribbons, including the Navy Enlisted Good Conduct Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal. After his navy retirement, Cmdr. McGrath worked more than 12 years for the Anchorage School District as a teacher, counselor and administrator at Chugiak, West and Dimond high schools. He served as past president of the Anchorage Council Navy League and Branch 342 Fleet Reserve Association. He held membership in the Retired Officers Association, three local Rotary clubs and Phi Delta Kappa. He held a private pilot's license and flew with the Elmendorf AFB Aero Club.
Cmdr. McGrath is survived by his wife, Shirley of Anchorage; daughter, Emily Samiadi of Bandung, Indonesia; son, James Jr. of Silver Spring, Md.; stepson, Philip Beran of New Madison, Ohio; and three grandchildren, Denese Samiadi and Zachary and Forrest Beran.
