Hendrik Kuneman was born in Cheribon, Dutch East Indies (nowadays Cirebon, Indonesia) to colonial administrator and former Dutch football player Harry Kuneman. During World War II, he served in the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army as a sergeant. He was taken Prisoner of War by the Japanese. He was taken aboard hell ship SS Tamahoko Maru, which was torpedoed and sunk by submarine USS Tang on 24 June 1944 at 32°24'N 129°38'E in the East China Sea near Nagasaki. Kuneman was among the 560 Allied POWs who died.
