Matamoras Soldier Killed in Viet Nam
PFC Peter H. Garms, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Allen R. Garms of 700 Pennsylvania Avenue, Matamoras died in Viet Nam November 15, 1968 as a result of injuries sustained in a training accident when a grenade which another trainee was preparing to throw detonated. He was immediately taken to a Military Hospital where he died.
Peter was a graduate of Delaware Valley High School, Class of 1966 and Wayne Community College, Honesdale, Pa., Class of 1967.
He enlisted in the Army Reserve August 22, 1967 and was inducted in the regular Army October 23, 1967. He received his basic training at Fort Gordon, Ga. and received further training at Fort Jackson, S.C. Ft. Benjamin Harrison, Ind., and Fort Riley, Kansas. He was home on leave October 18th before leaving for Fort Dix, N.J. from which point he left for Viet Nam, Nov. 9th.
He was a confirmed member of St. Peters Lutheran Church where he served as an Acolyte on the altar and was an officer of the Lutheran League. Also a member of the Boy Scout Troop 77, Matamoras.
Besides his parents he is survived by a sister, Betty 14, a paternal grandmother, Mrs. Sarah Garms of Brooklyn, N.Y. and several aunts, uncles and cousins..
