Mary Barbara Steinbach, daughter of Jacob and Emma (Redlinger) Hilmer was born on May 12, 1944, in St. Edward, NE by the late Dr. Sullivan. She was baptized on June 11, 1944, and confirmed in December of 1959 at Zion Lutheran Church, Albion, NE. Mary went to country school district #34 in rural Albion, NE where she learned the three R's and ABC's: reading, writing and arithmetic. She later attended Albion High School and graduated with the class of 1963. After graduation, Mary stayed home to help take care of her parents on the farm.

On October 28, 1967, Mary was united in marriage to Jake Steinbach at Zion Lutheran Church, Albion, NE. From this union Mary was blessed with two children. In between raising two children with Jake, she also helped him on the farm. While working in the fields until 7:00 p.m. most nights Jake's mother and father took care of their children.

Mary was an outdoorsy person. She enjoyed helping her husband out in the fields by discing, harrowing, and planting. She also helped get more seed corn and when it came time for harvest season. She would drive the tractor, pulling a baler while Jake piled square bales on a flat rack. Mary hauled ear corn with the tractor wagon and unloaded them on to an elevator into a steel crib. She also helped Jake fix fences every spring and fill the silo with silage on September 1st of every year.

Mary enjoyed cooking and baking for family gatherings at her home. She canned vegetables, beef, and her famous sweet pickles. Mary made pies and salads for Christmas and the Steinbach family picnic that was held twice a year. Mary took piano lessons for two and a half years from the late Mrs. Charles Evan's of Albion, NE. She also learned to play the organ. Mary enjoyed listening to Gospel music, reading her Bible, and prayer books. She liked to play cards with her family and close friends Carol Polk, Keith and Karen Rankin and Jim and the late Linda Nutt.

Mary is survived by her husband of 55 years: Jake Steinbach of St. Edward, NE; daughter: Cindy (Darvin) Fowlkes of Newman Grove, NE; son: Dan (Cindra) Steinbach of St. Edward; five grandsons: Cole (Courtney) Ziemba; Seth (Molly) Ziemba; Nate Fowlkes; Calab Steinbach; Kaden Steinbach; great-grandson: Camden Ziemba; great-granddaughter: Cora Ziemba; two brothers: Paul Hilmer and Gene Hilmer both of Albion, NE; along with nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
