LDS missionary Thomas Atkinson was traveling with fellow missionary Hiram M. Kimball en route to the Sandwich Islands (Hawai'i). They were killed when the boiler of the Milton Willis exploded in San Pedro Harbor. Their remains were recovered and buried in the Drum Barracks cemetery.
