BALMER, John Emil Jr. Passed peacefully in his home he shared with his "Sweetie Pie", Judith on April 14, 2008. His wife, Jewell Gill Balmer; father, John Emil Balmer Sr.; mother, Mollie Alvarez Balmer and brother, Henry 'Sonny Balmer, predeceased him. He is survived by his son, John Balmer (Palmdale); daughter Barbara (Lee) Shaw (Rosamond); sister, Mary McCormick (San Diego); nephews, Don (Barbara) McCormick (San Diego) and Michael (Mary Jo) McCormick (LaJolla); niece, Deborah (Memo) Garcia (Anaheim Hills); granddaughters Stacey Graham and Debbie (Matt) Diamond (Oregon); grandnephews Daniel, Chris, Alex Garcia; and great- grandchildren, Christina, Brandon, Marissa Graham, Amanda and Justin Diamond; and countless number of friends. John was born in San Diego on September 22, 1924. He committed his life to his family, friends, country and community. He com-
pleted his service the U.S. Navy in 1945. He served on the USS Independence, which was the first night carrier. He was most proud of his involvement in the Navy and his head was rarely seen without his USS Independence hat. He received the World War II Victory Medal - American Area, the Asiatic-Pacific 9 stars, and the Philippine Libertion 2 stars. His service to others did not end there. He was an Advisory board Chairman for the Salvation Army and received recognition in 1978, and 1981. He also received an award for Dedicated Public Service Director, Division No. 5 Antelope Valley- East Kern Water Agency from 1977 to 1983. In 1969, he was the president of the Antelope Valley Shrine Club in which he was a lifetime member. He was also a lifetime member of the VFW Quartz Hill, the Shrine Club and a member of the Masons. He volunteered at AV Hospital for over 20 years. John lived his life thinking about others. For this reason, he not only has left an imprint on many lives he has aided in changing some for the better. He was genuine in all of his action and words. He will be greatly missed and always remembered. A viewing will be held from 2 p.m., A Masonic service will start at 2:30 p.m. The viwing will end at 5 p.m., on April 23, 2008 at Mumaw Funeral Home located at 44633 N. Date St. Lancaster. Per his wishes the "Celebration of Johns Life" will take place at his home after viewing. The Legion of Mary will recite the rosary at Mumaw Funeral Home at 7p.m. Call Mumaw Funeral Home for directions 942-4614. Internment will be private.
