Eldon L. "Red" Wakefield, 86, of Newton, died at 7:40 a.m. Saturday, April 19, 2008, at Marliere Care Center in New Port Richey, Fla.

Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at Blake-Buchanan Funeral Home in Newton. A funeral mass celebrating Mr. Wakefield's life will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Newton with Rev. Father Al Kemme officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Newton with full military rites by Jasper Post #20 American Legion.

Mr. Wakefield was born October 13, 1921, in Dieterich, the son of Leonard and Stella (Scurlock) Wakefield. He was united in marriage to Betty Helregel on September 17, 1946, at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Newton. She survives.

He was an electrician and retired from Norris Electric Cooperative after 38 years of service. He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army. He was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Newton and a lifetime member of Knights of Columbus Council #1704 and Jasper Post #20 American Legion. He was an avid sports fan, especially Newton Eagles football and St. Louis Cardinals baseball. He enjoyed fishing, camping and spending his winters in Florida.

Mr. Wakefield is survived by the most precious things in his life, his family, which include his wife of 61 years, Betty Wakefield, of Newton; children, Keith Wakefield, of Newton, Sharon Dasenbrock and her husband, Doug, of Effingham, and Marla Adams and her husband, Tony, of Olney; grandchildren, Kim (Mike) Ashton, Michelle (Greg) Lueken, Matthew Wakefield, Heather Wakefield, Stephanie (Jake) Fuesting, Kyle (Jennifer) Adams, Krista Adams and Kody Adams; six great-grandchildren, Mason Conlin, Reilly Ashton, Emma Ashton, Avery Lueken, Hannah Lueken and Wyatt Fuesting; three nieces; and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by his daughter in 2001, Karen Hall; parents, Leonard and Stella Wakefield; stepparents, Nora Wakefield-Alvis and Harold Alvis; brother, Dale Wakefield; and sister, Norma Long.

In loving memory of Mr. Wakefield, memorials may be made to St. Thomas Catholic School or Marliere Hospice Care Center.
