Manford LeRoy Foltz, 85, died Tuesday, October 19, 2004, at the David M. Dorsett Health Care Facility in Spearfish, SD. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 21, 2004, at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel, Spearfish. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, October 22, 2004, at the United Methodist Church in Spearfish, with Rev. Kip Roozen, officiating. Interment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, SD, with full military honors provided by the Spearfish Honor Guard. Memorials have been established for the United Methodist Church and the DC Booth Historic Fish Hatchery both in Spearfish.

Manford was born in Lantry, SD, to Henry & Winnie Mae (McDaniel) Foltz. He moved to Spearfish with his family in the early 1930's and attended school there. He entered the U.S. Army in 1942 and was honorably discharged in October of 1945.

He returned to Spearfish and married Edith Joan Estes on April 28, 1947 at the Spearfish United Methodist Church. Manford and Joan enjoyed 47 years of marriage before Joan's death in September of 1994. Family and friends meant a great deal to Manford. He was always proud and supportive of all of his children and grandchildren no matter what they faced, good or bad. Although not a man of many words, he always had words to express the pride and support he held for his family.

Manford and his brother Gerald opened Foltz Cabinet Shop and ran it for 15 years. In 1974 he went to work for the Black Hills State College as a carpenter and later in maintenance, retiring in 1986.

After his retirement Manford volunteered at the DC Booth Historic Fish Hatchery until the age of 82. Manford had a special bond with the ducks and geese. He would make daily bread runs to the local stores. The ducks and geese would gather at the fence when they heard his little red pickup coming. Manford was a member of the Spearfish Volunteer Fire Department for over 20 years, a member of the United Methodist Church since 1927, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Club. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, and dancing.

Manford met Gwen Stensland at the Sturgis dances and became very special friends. For the next nine years they spent many hours together. She was at his side until the very end.

Manford is survived by two sons, Sidney (Linda) Foltz, Spearfish, Don (Michelle) Foltz, Emporia, KS, one daughter, Judith Foltz, Hollywood, CA, two brothers, Francis (Edie) Foltz, San Diego, CA, Gerald (Marie) Foltz, Spearfish, one sister, Grace (Wesley) Fairchild, Hagerman, ID, 6 grandchildren, Danielle Foltz, Jacksonville, FL, Elise & Glenn Foltz, Spearfish, Stephanie (Francisgo) Ventura, Emporia, Whitney Foltz, Emporia, and Tyler Foltz and his mother Candance Hall, Rapid City, SD, and one great grandchild, Kaylee Ventura, Emporia.

Manford was preceded in death by his wife Joan, one son, David Foltz, one sister, Eunica, and one brother, Chadwick.

Arrangements have been placed in the care of Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel.
