Zona Gail Whalen was born near DeSmet, SD on July 4, 1915, the daughter of Jesse and Millie (McCaskell) Whalen. She attended rural and public school there and graduated from DeSmet High School in 1933. She was employed at Metropolitan Life in DeSmet, Mitchell and Sioux Falls.

On July 4, 1937 she was united in marriage to Chester "Chet" Severson at the Methodist Parsonage in Salem, SD. They lived in Sioux Falls and during the war she moved to San Francisco and then Chicago to be near Chet. Following his discharge they moved to Mound, MN and in 1950 moved to Lennox. She and Chet owned and operated C & L Clothing Store in Lennox for 27 years, retiring in 1977. Her husband died on Oct. 7, 1999.

Zona was an active and faithful member of First English Lutheran Church where she belonged to WELCA and taught Sunday School for many years. She was a 50 year member of the Lennox American Legion Auxiliary and a 50 year member of the Order of Eastern Star. For over 25 years she was a member of the Lennox Senior Citizens where she set tables, decorated and quilted. She was a member of Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) since 1982 and was among the first to deliver Meals on Wheels in Lennox. She also served on the Board of Directors of Sunrise Manor and volunteered at the Lennox Good Samaritan Center. She was awarded the Lifetime Presidential Service Award by President Bush for her 4000 volunteer hours with RSVP. Zona was an awesome grandma and great-grandma and would do anything for her grandchildren.

Besides her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, William Kenneth Whalen and one sister, Alta Hauck.
