Virgil A. Mewes, 65, of Atwood died March 20, 1998 in Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Services will be March 24 at Mackey-Wright Funeral Home, Monticello with burial in Mackville Cemetery, Atwood.

Mr. Mewes was born in Fisher on June 13, 1932, the s/o Lester A. and Wilma Gertrude Brown Mewes. He married Judy K. Williamson on December 5, 1959 in St. Joseph. Surviving are his wife; son, Kieth of Atwood; daughter, Karen Schwass of Joliet; sister, Vivian Smith, Britt IA; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, Monticello; retired postal worker for 14 years in Bement and 14 years in Monticello; served in the Korean conflict; farmed in the Atwood area; school bus driver for Atwood schools and former assistant chief at the Atwood Fire Department. Since retirement, he missed working at the window at the Monticello post office where he could greet and serve the public.
