Hedevig Christine Paus was the maternal grandmother of the playwright Henrik Ibsen. Born at Bjåland in Lårdal, moved to Skien as a young woman and married merchant and ship-owner Johan Andreas Altenburg. She was the sister of Ole Paus, Knud Ibsen's stepfather. The siblings Hedevig and Ole Paus were descended from a long line of lawyers and priests in Upper Telemark, part of the region's elite, the "aristocracy of officials" who governed this remote region.
