Roman Catholic Cardinal. Siétamo born Antonio María Javierre Ortas's brother, José María Javierre Ortas was a diocesan priest and one of the most distinguished and successful writers and journalists in the Spanish language countries. Joining the Salesians of Don Bosco with whom he professed in 1940, Antonio María underwent studies in Huesca, Saragossa, Barcelona, Gerona, Salamanca, Santander, Rome and Louvain. Ordained priest on April 24, 1949, he lectured fundamental theology at the Pontifical Salesian Athenaeum of Turin between 1951 and 1976. Dean of the theological faculty of the Pontifical Salesian University of Rome from 1971 and 1974, he delivered conferences and lectures at the Universities of Salamanca, Lima, Guatemala, Navarra, Lublin, Warsaw and Rome among others at the Regina Mundi, Angelicum, Marianum, Gregorian and Lateranense. Holding an active participation in several congresses, especially on the theme of fundamental theology, he was the creator, co-founder and secretary general of the "Symposium" of fundamental theology in Louvain and Gazzada. Consultor of the Vatican Secretariat for Christian Unity, he preached the spiritual exercises for Pope Paul VI and the Roman Curia during lent in 1973. Elected archbishop of the titular see of Meta and appointed secretary of the Sacred Congregation for Catholic Education on May 20, 1976, Javierre Ortas received his episcopal consecration on the following June 29 inside the cathedral of Huesca from Cardinal Vicente Enrique Tarancón. Pope John Paul II created him cardinal deacon in the consistory of June 28, 1988 with the deaconry of Santa Maria Liberatrice a Monte Testaccio and named him librarian and archivist of the Holy Roman Church on July 1, 1988, a position he held until April 9, 1992. Appointed prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments on January 24, 1992, he served in office until June 21, 1996. Opting for the order of cardinal priests, his deaconry was elevated 'pro hac vice' to title on January 9, 1999. On Wednesday, January 31, 2007, feast of San Giovanni Bosco, founder of the Salesians, the Cardinal celebrated mass in the chapel of his residence near the Vatican. After dinner, along with the religious of the congregation of the Servants of Jesus Christ Priest, who took care of his household, and some of his close friends he watched the movie "Don Bosco". A few hours later, on Thursday, February 1, he passed unexpectedly away at 6.30 am., of a cardiac arrest. He had been undergoing dialysis for some time. The body of the late Cardinal was exposed in his Roman residence at via Rusticucci 13, until Friday, February 2, 2007, at 9.30 am., when he was transferred to the Papal Vatican Basilica. On that day at noon, in the altar of the chair took place the exequies for the late Cardinal, presided by Pope Benedict XVI. After the Eucharistic celebration, his mortal remains were laid to rest in the catacombs of San Callisto.
