Erich was the son of German immigrants, Frank Boerner (1859-1926) and Anna Selma Kertscher (1859-1921). Although born in Oregon, his family soon relocated to the San Francisco Bay area. A resident of Oakland, he delivered mail for the US Postal Service from about 1916 until his retirement, 30 years later.

In 1919 he married first, Ruby Gladys Holton (1901-1971). He and Ruby had three children together:
- Herbert E. Boerner (1920-1920)
- Yvonne Elizabeth (Berry) Boerner (1923-1991)
- Marjorie "Marjie" Jane (Pearson) Boerner (1924- )

In 1930 he married second, Jessie Wilhelmina Winther (1908-1999), originally from Norway. He and Jessie had six children together:
- Harold Frank (Hal) Boerner (1931-2006)
- Sonja Viola (Ciesielski) Boerner (1933-2007)
- Maureen "Mimi" Valerie (Kent) Boerner (1936- )
- Sharon Colleen (Lehman) Boerner (1939- )
- John Bruce Boerner (1942- )
- David Lloyd Boerner (1944-1992)

Erich was a multi-talented man; he was a skilled carpenter, photographer, and gardener. He also sang in a barber shop quartet.

His very long full name is not in error; he was named, in part, after a relation on his mother's side of the family. I obtained this explanation from two of Erich's children, John and Marjorie.
