Jane Elizabeth Grote Roberts, 79, died of cancer at home with her family at her side.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Roscoe; children, Owen, Marian, Ann, Bill and Carl; 13 grandchildren; brother, Dr. Carl A. Grote Jr.; many, many friends; and a community that has been her benefactor since she was a teenage volunteer as a nurse's aide in Huntsville Hospital during World War II. Throughout her life she gave herself in civic activities as did her father and her brother, Drs. Carl A. Grote Sr. and Jr.

Jane was honored many times for her community service. When given the Grace Award in 1981, Jane said: "I love my volunteer work. I get 10 times more out of it than I put into it." A partial list of Jane's service includes: Leadership roles with: Huntsville Public Library 35 years; spearheaded the establishment of the Gray Ladies(now the Red Cross volunteers); Rehabilitation Center for Crippled Children; Alabama Society for Crippled Children and Adults; Counseling and Growth Center (now the Family Service Center); founding and active member of the Trinity United Methodist Church; Day Care Association; Mental Health Center; American Red Cross; United Way; Junior League; Rehabilitation Foundation; Volunteer Growth Center (now the Voluntary Action Center); Community Council; Second Step Home; WLRH Public Radio; and Grace Club Auxiliary.

Throughout her life, her primary dedication was the rearing of five beautiful children, which included her energetic support of the various school activities, PTA's, carpooling, fundraising, etc.

Jane had a deep love of Huntsville, books, travel and family. Those who knew her as well as those she never met but who benefited by her many community activities will miss her. She left this world a better place.

Visitation will be from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity United Methodist Church Narthex. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. with Dr. Charles Gattis and Dr. F. Willis Vickery officiating. Interment will follow at Maple Hill Cemetery. Laughlin Service Funeral Home is assisting the family.

In lieu of flowers, please give to the Huntsville Public Library, Jane Grote Roberts Endowment Fund (for books),Trinity United Methodist Church Building Fund or the charity of your choice.
