Paul Untiedt…. Funeral Held Tuesday For
Widely Known Kanaranzi Pioneer….

Rock County this week mourned the passing of one
of its most respected citizens, Paul Untiedt, 71, of
Kanaranzi. A farmer, merchant, postmaster,
banker, public official, Mr. Untiedt succumbed at a
Sioux Falls hospital Sunday night, following an
illness of nine week's duration.

Funeral services were held from the family home in
Kanaranzi Tuesday afternoon, with Rev. H. Calvin
Knock, pastor of the Luverne Presbyterian church
officiating. Close friends and neighbors served as
Pallbearers and included J. P. Hickman, Elmer
Wellendorf, F.F. Curry, Henry Hanson, Chas Husen
and Joy Baker. Interment was made in Ashwood
Cemetery near Kanaranzi.

TAUGHT SCHOOL-
Mr. Untiedt was born in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany
Sept. 2, 1870 and came to this country at the age of
12. He lived at Spirit Lake, Iowa and in the state of
Washington 5 years before moving to Rock County.
From 1896 to 1899, he taught school in Jackson County,
Mountain Lake, and at Spirit Lake. It was in September
1899 that he came to Kanaranzi and bought a store
which he continued to operate until five years ago
when he was forced to retire because of his health.

WAS POSTMASTER
He became Kanaranzi's first postmaster and served
in that capacity until his resignation in 1934. With the
aid of his children he farmed land in the vicinity of
Kanaranzi. He served on the board of directors of the
Kanaranzi State Bank for 26 years and was director of
the Ellsworth bank for a third of a century. From 1928
until the time of his passing, he was president of the
Kanaranzi bank. He was one of the organizers of the
Farmers' elevator at Kanaranzi and had been its
secretary since 1903. He helped organize the Luverne
Co-operative Creamery and served as its director for a
number of years.
He was a director of the Rock County Burial Association
and also served on the Rock County Fair board of
Directors for many years.

HELD PUBLIC OFFICES
Public offices held by Mr. Untiedt were that of county
Commissioner, township assessor and member of the
school board in the Kanaranzi district. He began his
term as county commissioner in 1928 and served until
1936. During that time he was chairman of the board
for two one year terms. He was assessor for 14 years
and served on the school board for 35 years.

Mr. Untiedt was married on Oct. 12, 1899 to Emma
Schwager, at Spirit Lake. To their union were born 12
children, nine of whom survive with Mrs. Untiedt.
They include Elmer of Terrill, Ia; Clarence of Steen;
Harry of Hills; Lloyd of Luverne; Mrs. Ann Hickman,
Ellsworth; Henry, Mrs. Harriet Boelman, Marcella;
And Paul, all of Kanaranzi. Two children died in
Infancy, and a daughter, Mrs. Lucille Pank, preceded
her father in death on May 2, 1939. (Rock County Star
