Bob VanWey Killed In Action In Korea War

Pfc. Charles Robert VanWey, 18-year-old foster son of Mayor and Mrs. Louis E. Mansfield, is Ashland county's fourth Korean war fatality.
A telegram of deep regret was received by Mayor and Mrs. Mansfield last evening from the Secretary of the Army, notifying them that Pfc. VanWey was killed in action in Korea Sept.23.
The young, Ashland soldier, who would have been 19 years old October 25, enlisted in the U.S. Army at 17. He entered services Nov. 2, 1948 and was sent overseas in March, 1949, having been stationbed in Japan prior to being transferred to the Korean Front.
Pfc. VanWey was assigned to the 32nd Infantry Regiment of a medical company.
Mayor and Mrs. Mansfield, who reside at 323 East Ninth street, were guardians of the youth, who had previuosly been a ward of the Children's Home. Bob attended Ashland schools and was a member of First Methodist church.
Local survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Jean Watson of east Libertystreet and Geneva VanWey, a third sister in Mansfield, three brothers, Patrick, Richard, and James, all in custody of the Ashland county child welfare board, and a fourth brother, John VanWey, now stationed with the Army in Germany.
Pfc. VanWey is Ashland county's fourth Korean War fatality. Previously reported killed in action were Sgt. William F. Henry, 33, of Savannah; Pfc. Dwight Curtis White, 21, of Ashland; Pfc. Asa William Smith, of Ashland. [Vine Street neighbor 1950].

Also survivng is a sister, Mrs. Fred Hout of Mansfield. Pfc. Van Wey was preceded in death bt a baby brother.
Other survivors were reported in yesterday's Times-Gazette.

PLAN MILITARY RITES SATURDAY FOR PFC.

The body of Pfc. Charles Robert VanWey, 18-year-old foster son of Mayor and Mrs. Louise E. Mansfield, and Ashland county's fourth Koran was fatality, will arrive in this city Friday noon for funeral services.
Pfc. VanWey was killed in action in Korea on Sept 23, and a telegram of deep regret was received by Mayor and Mrs. Mansfield on Oct. 10, 1950, from the Secretary of teh Army.
The body of the young Ashland soldier is the first of the local Korean war casuslities to be brought back home.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Denbow and Bear Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Saturday. Dr. H.E. Andrews, pastor emeritus of the First Presbyterian church, will officiate, assisted by Rev. C.S. Applegath, pastor of the First Methodist church. Burial will be made in the Ashland cemetery.
Military services will be conducted at the grave by the local American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Posts.
Dr. Andrews is chaplain of the Legion post.

He was preceded in death by another brother, Donald VanWey.
