FUNKHOUSER – Kenneth V., retired Air Force colonel, 63, Avon Lake, Ohio, beloved father and husband, passed away suddenly Wednesday, June 11, 2008, at the St. John West Shore Hospital in Westlake, Ohio. He was born Dec. 17, 1944, in New Castle, Pa., the son of the late Kenneth Verle and Laura Lach Funkhouser. Col. Funkhouser proudly served his country and loved the Air Force. He served 28 years from 1966 until his retirement as Colonel in 1994. He was a graduate of the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., and received his master's degree in systems analysis from Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. He served during the Vietnam War and also supported Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He was a senior pilot flying the F-102, F-106 and F-4 aircraft and received the Legion of Merit Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster and the Distinguished Flying Cross, as well as other honors. During his career, he was stationed for extended periods in Iceland and Germany. Upon his retirement from the military, he was then employed as a manager of systems engineering for Concurrent Technology Corp. in Johnstown until retiring in 2007. He then moved to Avon Lake to be near his wife's family. Kenneth is survived by his wife of 40 years, Chris (McGrew); son, Todd Kenneth Funkhouser of Leesburg, Va.; daughter, Lauren Gray Funkhouser (husband, Christopher Joseph), and grandson, Jackson Mielad Joseph, all of Amman, Jordan; two sisters, Jacquelyn F. Morrissey (husband, Donald) of Chatham, Mass., and Ann Funkhouser Dehgan of Sacramento, Calif.; brother, Howard Paul Funkhouser (wife, Deborah C.) of Lynn Haven, Fla.; his mother-in-law, Theda C. McGrew of Avon Lake, Ohio; two sisters-in-law, Lynn M. Miller (husband, Robert) also of Avon Lake, and Lori M. Veldhuis (husband, Harry) of Lakeville, Minn.; brother-in-law, Kevin W. McGrew (wife, Bonnie K.) of Chandler, Ariz.; as well as loving nieces and nephews, extended family and many friends. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Busch Funeral Home, 163 Avon-Belden Road, Avon Lake. Full military honors will be observed at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, at Fort Myer Chapel at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va., where burial will then take place.
