Virgil James Montani, otherwise known as Jack Clifford. A former boxer from Italy and the second husband of socialite/model/actress Evelyn Nesbit, Jack Clifford appeared opposite his wife in Threads of Destiny (1914). Much busier in the talkie era, Clifford played innumerable bit roles from 1931 to 1949, including the nasty dogcatcher in Jackie Cooper's Skippy (1931), Uncle Tom in Shirley Temple' s Dimples (1936), and assorted lawmen in B-Westerns. He appeared in Sweet Adeline (1926), The Revenge Rider (1935), and The Man from Guntown (1935). Clifford's final role was that of a henchman in several episodes of television's The Lone Ranger series.

Articles published at the time of his marriage stated he was the son of the late Brigadier Gen. Joseph Montani of the Royal Italian Army. Family trees show he was the son of Gen. Guiseppe (Joseph) Mario Montani and wife Elenora Matilde Rissetto of Italy, and was born Oct. 17, 1880 in Chiavari, Genova, Liguria, Italy.
Interestingly, he claimed Norfolk, Virginia as his birthplace in at least two official military documents and also claimed to be native-born on several passenger lists. I haven’t checked passport applications. Was he naturalized at Norfolk?
