CHURCH:
Story from St. Peres Church in Chicago;
Local History
Amoung the men who were active workers in our church in its earlier history, but who have so far not been mentioned in these columns, was John Baumgarten. Since none of his children with the exception of his oldest daughter in Nebraska, are now living, it is not easy to get all the facts pertaining to his life. But such as have been ascertained are herewith presented.

He was born in Schleawig-Holstein September 19, 1834. As a young man he appeared upon the American scene in Nebraska, where he acquired a farm under the federal homestead laws. He was married and there his wife presented him with a daughter whom they named Christine. The mother died soon afterwards and Christine was raised by her relatives. In the course of time she married a Mr. Schumacher. She is still living in Nebraska City, Nebraska. Shortly after the tragedy of the mother's death, John Baumgarten came to Chicago and here he married Miss Henrietta Duensing, who according to all indications, was a sister of that study St. Peterite, Chalres Duensing (1831-1902). This good wife bore Mr Baumgarten many children of whom non are now living. The burial lot on Graceland Cemetery contains the bodies of six children that died in infancy; also those of Anna, who reached the age of 24, and of Ella Stubbing, aged 31. Of the remaining children, Edwin died in the west a few years ago; Charles, a successful plumber, died about ten years ago; and Alma Borgwaldt passed away in 1930. Her three daughters, Marie, Vera & Emily, members of St Stephans Evang. Church are living at 138 Parkside Ave.

Mother Henrietta Baumgarten died July 1, 1884, having been born January 28 in Marienace, Hannover. Some time later, Mr Baumgarten married as his third wife Mrs. Mary Buehler, a widow with several children, who survived him by about seven years. He himself died on February 27, 1908.

Mr John Baumgarten engaged in the commission business here in Chicago. In 1876 he lived at 187 W. Chicago Ave. (near Carpenter St.) This was in the old 14th Ward, the population of which was predominantly German. Being popular among the people of his ward, he succeeded in securing his election to the common Council as alderman, and he served as such during the first the of the elder Carter Harrison. By 1878 the Socialist Party had grown in strength and Frank Stauber of tat party was elected as alderman, the opposition party having two candidates in he field John Baumgarten and Mr. Gastfield. As salve for his defeat Mr. Baumgarten was given employment as bailiff in the Criminal & Superior Courts of Cook County; at other times he was employed as clerk and inspector in the City Hall, his last public position being in 1895 when he was a city inspector.

Following his death in 1905 the City Council, on motion of Alderman Beilfuss, adopted a resolution in his honor in which it was "resolved, that in the death of John Baumgarten the City of Chicago has lost a valuable citizen who, as a public official, served the people faithfully and well." His home during the last year of his life was at 28 Clarkson Ct.

Mr. Baumgarten's membership in St. Peters Church dates back to the early 1870's. He was elected a trustee in 1884, and reelected six times, the last time in 1896. From 1886 to 1890, and again from 1894 to 1896 (eight years in all he served as president of the Church Council, being succeeded in 1897 by Nickolaus Wirth. It was in April of the latter year that he resigned from the church. All will agree that a man who gave so much of his time and energy to the welfare and upbuilding of our church deserves to have his name perpetuated in these records.
