J. A. MITCHELL IS DEAD
END COMES TO PROMINENT CARTHAGE MAN THIS AFTERNOON

Was Pioneer Citizen and Long Cashier of Bank of Carthage - Nearly 79 Years Old

J. A. Mitchell, one of the most prominent citizens of Carthage and one of the leading bankers of this city, died at 2:10 o'clock this afternoon at his home at 903 South Main street, after a long illness from senility. His condition has been critical most of the time for several months.
Mr. Mitchell was born in March 1837 in Franklin county, Maine being almost 79 years old at the time of his death. His education was procured in the public schools and an academy in his native state. After putting away his text books he worked on his father's farm for a time and then was employed in various businesses until 1871, when he became a partner in a large grocery house in St. Louis, for which concern he had been a salesman for some time. He was connected with that enterprise until 1878, when he sold his interest there and came to Carthage.
He purchased an interest in Bank of Carthage with which institution he was identified until his death. He was cashier of that bank until about eight years ago, when he retired because of failing health and his advancing years. He continued as a member of the board of directors until his death. From 1870 until 1886 he and his partner, G. A. Cassil, owner of the entire stock of the bank. It was under their ownership of the institution that the bank was incorporated in 1880. Mr. Mitchell also had extensive real estate interests in this county.
In 1869 Mr. Mitchell was married to Miss Mary B. Rose, of St. Louis, who survives him. Two daughters also survive. They are Mrs. T. P. Barnett of St. Louis and Miss Julia Mitchell of this city.
The Mitchell family long has been one of the most prominent in Carthage, the members having a high place in social circles. An attractive personality and a pleasing disposition made for Mr. Mitchell a large number of friends, and these traits also were strong assets in his business career. He was a member of the Elks lodge.
Mrs. Barnett was not present when her father died and the funeral arrangements will not be made until she is heard from. None of the plans for the funeral had been made this afternoon.
