Russell Gates was born November 28, 1845. His nephew Frederick Taylor Gates said, "quite unlike others in the Gates family, he was endowed with large executive ability, boldness, energy, and worldly ambition, while his religious instinct was reduced to quite manageable proportions." As a youth, he was an athlete and a champion checkers player. Before reaching adulthood, he went to work in the Pennsylvania oil region. Later, he was business manager for a large company before he established his own business in Boston, MA.
He contracted tuberculosis and went to Colorado for his health. There he became, first, a wealthy rancher and, later, a merchant with several retail stores. The Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Department of the Interior, issued five land patents to Russell Gates between March 15, 1882 and March 9, 1908, totaling almost 600 acres in the Colorado Counties of El Paso, Lincoln, and Elbert. In the 1890 Denver City Directory, he was listed as a livestock dealer, residing at the southwest corner of Josephine and 14th streets. He entered politics and ran, unsuccessfully, as the Republican candidate for mayor of Denver.
