Russell Gates 70, was born in New York in 1845. He was the husband of Eleanor Gates, (1859-1945). In the 1900 US Census, he, Eleanor and sons Louis, Robert and Correy Gates were all living together in Denver Colorado with servant Madge Wilson. He is buried in Riverside Cemetery in Denver Colorado with Eleanor, Robert (1887-1970), and Catherine Gates (1883-1884). It is refered to as the "Pioneer Cemetery", because many of Denver's first pioneers are buried there.

His nephew Frederick Taylor Gates said, "quite unlike others in the Gates family, he was endowed with large executive ability, boldness, energy, and worldly ambition, while his religious instinct was reduced to quite manageable proportions." Later, he was business manager for a large company before he established his own business in Boston, MA.
He contracted tuberculosis and went to Colorado for his health. There he became, first, a wealthy rancher and, later, a merchant with several retail stores. The Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Department of the Interior, issued five land patents to Russell Gates between March 15, 1882 and March 9, 1908, totaling almost 600 acres in the Colorado Counties of El Paso, Lincoln, and Elbert. In the 1890 Denver City Directory, he was listed as a livestock dealer, residing at the southwest corner of Josephine and 14th streets. He entered politics and ran, unsuccessfully, as the Republican candidate for mayor of Denver.
