US MARINE CORPS WWII

James Newton McCracken enlisted in the Marine Corps 12 December, 1942 from Manilla, Iowa. Recruited into a Commissioning program called "V-12" which allowed him to attend College while carried on rolls of the Platoon Leaders Unit, 9th Reserve District, Great Lakes in enlisted inactive reserve status. 6 July, 1943 ordered to active duty and completed recruit training in the 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, MCRD San Diego, CA.

22 October, 1943 assigned to Marine Barracks, Naval Air Station, Alemeda, CA. During February, 1944 promoted to Private First Class. During March, 1944 assigned to D Company, Infantry Battalion, Training Center, MCB Camp Elliott, CA. Trained and designated a Heavy Machine Gunner (MOS 605) and assigned to the 60th Replacement Battalion. 24 June, 1944 embarked SS Azalia City at San Diego for movement overseas.

2 July, 1944 arrived Pearl Harbor and assigned to HQ Company, Replacement Battalion, Transient Center, MCB Camp Catlin, Oahu. 29 July, 1944 embarked USS DE Grasse (AP-164) at Pearl Harbor. 16 August, 1944 arrived at Guam and assigned to F Company, 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines, 3rd Marine Division based at Ylig Bay. Participated in patrolling against Japanese Forces until 3 November, 1944. Promoted to Corporal.

8 February, 1945 embarked the USS Knox (APA-46). 17 February, 1945 left the Marianas. 19 February 1945 off shore reserves during D-Day landings at Iwo Jima. 24 February, 1945 landed Beach Black Iwo Jima participated in combat operations until Killed in Action 25 February, 1945.

Next of Kin: Parents, Mr Newton B and Mrs Milda E McCracken, Route One, Manilla, Iowa.

Initially buried in the 4th Marine Division Cemetery on Iwo Jima.

1948 Returned to the US for permanent burial in Manilla, Iowa.
