Michael W. O'Connell, 81, of Newington, died Friday (Sept. 18, 1998). He was the beloved husband for 60 years of Lucy (Mascolo) O'Connell. Born in Toronto, Canada, he was a Newington resident for the past 41 years and retired from the Internal Revenue Service, Hartford, after 30 years of employment. Mr. O'Connell was a member of AARP No. 697, the Newington Senior Citizens and the Swinging Singing Seniors. He was an active member of the Polish American Club, past president and a former member of the Lions Club and a former member of the Hartford Saengerbund. He volunteered his time with Meals on Wheels and at the Senior Center where he prepared income taxes. Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Nancy White and her husband, Gene of Stonington and Doreen O'Connell of Newington; three sisters, Veronica Cote of West Hartford, Maureen Gallagher of Bloomfield and Theresa Benoit of North Carolina; a brother, Edward Frith of West Hartford; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Geraldine O'Connell; a sister, Eileen Guertin; and a brother, Patrick O'Connell. Funeral services will be Monday (Sept. 21), 9:15 a.m. from the Newington Memorial Funeral Home, 20 Bonair Ave., Newington, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Church of the Holy Spririt, Newington. Burial will be in Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. Relatives and friends are invited to call Sunday (Sept. 20), 4-8 p.m. at Newington Memorial. Memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Assoc., 45 Ash St., East Hartford 06108.
