Col. Rohde has been a resident of Colorado Springs since 1973. After serving in the Army Corps of Engineers for 29 years, he later taught pre-engineering classes at Fort Louis College in Durango for nine years.

After retiring from that position he and his family moved to Colorado Springs. He was born in Sandusky, Ohio January 12, 1913.

He grew up on the family farm. He was appointed to West Point and he graduated 17th in his class in 1935. He earned a master's degree in civil engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

He served in Africa, Italy and the Philippines during World War II. He was stationed at bases in eight states during his career. He also served in a peacetime capacity in Germany and Korea.

While stationed at Lowry Field near Denver, he discovered the beauty of Colorado and chose it as his retirement home many years later. His first wife of 54 years, Cecile, died in 1991. He married Helen Anderson in 1993.

She and his five children survive: Wilfred Rohde of Poughkeepsie, NY; Cecile Rohde of Pebble Beach, California; Jeanne Lang of Clotskanie, Oregon; Karen Haley of Greenwood Village, Colorado and Paula Rohde of Colorado Springs, CO.

He is the grandfather of 17 and the great grandfather of 14. His step-family includes 8 children; 18 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Otto spent much of his retirement with home improvement projects for himself and his children.

He volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and he was among the first group of volunteers after the Garden of the Gods Visitor Center was built. He and his wife, Helen, served at the information desk, led walks and conducted bus tours for ten years.
