Joseph P. Kane, 84, of 250 W. Sixth St., formerly of Knepper Lane, died at 1:35 a.m. Tuesday, July 29, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque, following a brief illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 1, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Key West, Iowa, with the Rev. Donald Bakewell officiating. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery, New Melleray, rural Peosta, Iowa. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Leonard Funeral Home and Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where there will be a wake service at 3 p.m.
He was born on March 8, 1924, in rural Peosta, son of Joseph and Mary (Urbain) Kane. He attended a rural one room school through eighth grade.
He married Angela McCarthy on Nov. 30, 1944, at Holy Family Church, New Melleray, and they celebrated 56 years together; she preceded him in death on Feb. 1, 2002.
Joe farmed at various locations including, Zwingle, Bernard and the Dubuque Airport farm for over 40 years. Later, he held various welding and custodial jobs and shuttled rental cars.
Surviving are his 10 children, Shirley (Glenn) Sieverding, of Bellevue, Iowa, Joyce Haudenshield, of Dubuque, Janet (John) Beiris, of Hillman, Minn., Mary Jo (Jay) Kiernan, of Dubuque, Dan (friend, Cheryl) Kane, of Galena, Ill., Marie (Jim) Balk, of Dubuque, Marty (Cindy) Kane, of Ringsted, Iowa, Mike Kane, of Dubuque, Linda (Clarence) Hoftender, of Galena, and Bill (Mary Kay) Kane, of Zwingle; 18 grandchildren, Bill (Donna) Sieverding, Brian (Dacia) Sieverding, Cheryl Sieverding and John (Kayla) Sieverding, Christine (Gary) Geers, Jayme (Tracy) Kiernan, Keith (Angie) Kiernan, Dan Jr. (Shannon) Kane, Jacob Kane, Rachel Kane, Zachary Kane, Terry (Nikki) Kane, Mark (Robin) Kane, Kevin Kane, CJ Hoftender, Bob Hoftender, Elizabeth Kane, and Jennifer Kane; five step-grandchildren, Michael (Theresa) Haudenshield, Jacob and Nicole Balk and Andrea and Heather Bradeen; 27 great-grandchildren; brothers, Thomas (Kaye) Kane and John Paul (Gracie) Kane.
He also was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mary (Urbain) Kane; son-in-law, James Haudenshield; sister-in-law, Grace (Merfeld) Kane; father and mother-in-law, Daniel and Loretta (O'Brien) McCarthy.
