Mom fell in 2000 and broke her hip. She was taken to the hospital but before they would operate, they did a full body MRI because of her previous back problems. They discovered that because of surgery and radiation therapy in the 70's to remove a massive bone tumor from her upper spine, that her spine had begun to collapse in on itself. She was operated on for her hip and then operated on at Johns Hopkins for her back issues. The surgery was not successful and she came out with complications. Progressive scar tissue put pressure on her spinal cord and by 2001 she was confined to a wheelchair. Numerous therapies were tried but in late 2002 because of the progressive scar tissue still continuing to choke off her spinal cord, she was declared terminal. She organized her own funeral from the hospital bed that had been set up for her and she died quietly at home in January.
