Artist. Academician. He specialised in pastel portraits. He was born in Revel (now Tallinn, Estonia) and was educated in Russia Academy of Arst, becoming a court artist of the Russian czars and known in Russia as Vladimir Ivanovich Gau. He attended from 1833 to 1835 as an auditor, at the Art Academy in the Russian capital of St. Petersburg. From 1842 he became an artist in St. Petersburg. He was appointed in 1849 as a member of the Academy of Art. Among the most famous works were the Woldemar house, and his portraits of the Russian Tsar Nicholas I, the Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna, and other members of the royal family, as well as pictures of famous personalities of the Russian and Baltic German society. Among them were Ferdinand Wiedemann, Leopold von Pezold, Natalya Pushkina-Lanskaja and Varvara Assenkowa.
