Frank E. Brandt, 87, Deming resident passed away Friday September 20, 2002, at his home.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, September 24, 2002 at 10:30 in the morning at St. Luke's Episcopal Church with Father Williams of Las Cruses officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in University Cemetery, Ames, Iowa.
Frank was born March 17, 1915, in Carroll, Iowa to Elvira and Erwin Brandt. He attended school in Cedar Heights, Iowa and graduated from West Waterloo High School in 1934 and then attended Iowa State Teachers College (now University of Northern Iowa) where he graduated in 1938 with a bachelor's degree. He married Laura Simpson in 1939 and they moved to Clear Lake, Iowa where he taught English and Drama at Clear Lake High School before taking a similar post in Ames, Iowa in 1944.
In 1946 he joined the speech staff at Iowa State College where he taught speech and theater courses and directed plays and served as professor-in-charge of theatre from 1946 to 1969 during which time he earned his Masters degree in 1948. Frank was known as "Mister Theater."
He retired as professor emeritus in 1981 at which time they moved to Deming where he continued to pursue his love of theatre by producing plays at the Deming Luna Mimbres Museum and at the "Black Box" in Las Cruces. Several of the productions featured Professor Jane Cox's one-person shows. Professor Cox was a former student of his at Iowa State University. Frank served on the governing board of the museum and also as a volunteer. In 1998, at the age of 83, he was invited to return to Ames for Iowa State University Alumni Days to direct a production of his favorite play, Thorton Wilder's "Our Town" at Fisher Theater.
Survivors include his wife of 7 years, Namie Walker Brandt of the home; a daughter, Caroline Marz of Homestead, Iowa, a grandson, Alan Cerwick of San Antonio, Texas, granddaughter, Brigitte Davis of Sugar Grove, Il and great granddaughter, Mackenzie Davis and stepdaughter, Deborah McSherry and her children, Lindsey, Megan, Ryan, and Matthew.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Deming Luna Mimbres Museum, 301 S. Silver Ave., Deming, NM 88030, St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 419 Spruce St., Deming, MN 88030 or to Frank E. Brandt Technical Theatre Scholarship at Iowa State University in Ames.
Entrusted to the care of Baca's Funeral Chapels of Deming, 811 S. Gold Avenue.
