"Colonel John Buchanan died at the home of his niece, Mrs. Walton, wife of Hon. D. S. Walton, on Monday morning at eight o'clock. The deceased was taken sick some time ago and the death resulted from general debility. He was born and reared in this county and spent nearly all his life here. He was a man of honesty and integrity and well liked by a large circle of friends. When Gen. Grant visited here in 1876 he was introduced to a Waynesburg audience by Col. Buchanan. His wife preceded him in the grave many years ago and he left no children to survive him. He is survived by two brothers, J. A. J. Buchanan, Esq., and David Buchanan, a farmer of this county. For several years he has made his home with D. S. Walton, Esq., where he was tenderly cared for until his death. Funeral services were held at the home of Mrs. Walton at 2 p.m. Wednesday, after which the remains were interred in Green Mount Cemetery."
