Anchorage resident Melissa Jayne Neher, 16, died Oct. 31, 1999, at Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage of injuries she received in an auto accident Oct. 30, 1999. A service was at Anchorage Baptist Temple with Mr. Bill Leight officiating. Visitation was for one hour prior to the service. Members of the Dimond High School JROTC served as pallbearers. Burial was in the spring at Angelus Memorial Park Cemetery.

Miss Neher was born Feb. 24, 1983, in Anchorage and was a junior at Dimond High School. She was an honor-roll student and member of the symphonic band, cross-country running team, track-and-field team, Key Club, honor society and JROTC. She had held roles in the Anchorage Community Theater productions of ''Annie,'' ''Oliver,'' ''Bugsy Malone'' and ''Snow White.'' Melissa loved music, loved to run and loved to dance. Her mother said: ''Melissa was a kind soul who always stood up for the 'underdog.' She loved to joke around. She was never afraid to voice her opinions. Melissa was very focused and was working hard to earn an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. She was loved by all. Her giving continued after death through the donation of her organs.''
