MARK HOUT DEEMS
Mark Hout Deems was born in Ohio Feb. 24, 1852, and died at Gothenburg, Nebr., Oct. 28, 1924, at the age of 72 years, 8 months and 4 days.
When a small boy he moved with his parents to Illinois, and still later to Nebraska, settling near York. He came to Gothenburg in 1906, where he has since resided, except for a short period spent in Oklahoma.
He was married at York, to Miss Deborah McCreary, in 1874. Five children were born, as follows: Ida, now Mrs. Fred Douglass, Cheyenne, Wyo.; Rose, now Mrs. C. J. Stevens, of Oregon; John, of Denver, Colorado; Lizzie, now Mrs. Arthur Owings, of Hastings, Nebr.; and Lelah, now Mrs. John Gegan, of Colwich, Kan. Mrs. Deems died a few years ago, and Mr. Deems was married to Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Fitzsimmons, June 2, 1917, who survives him.
Mr. Deems was a hard working man, and while he regretted that his life had made no better "showing," as he called it, he made an earnest effort to play the part of an honest working man.
He was converted early in life and retained his membership in the church throughout his life. Until his health interfered, he was a regular attendant at church and Sunday School at the Gothenburg Methodist church.
His earth day is ended. He has passed on into that realm from which no traveler has ever returned, and leaves a good testimony behind, of fidelity to his Master, while he has gone to receive his reward.
Funeral services were held on Friday at the Methodist church, conducted by Rev. W. H. Shoaf, and interment was made in Gothenburg cemetery.
