HERMISTON – A funeral mass to celebrate the life of Wendelin "Wendell" Mack will be held at 9 a.m. Aug. 6 at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church in Hermiston. Interment will follow at Hermiston Cemetery, then luncheon will be served at Our Lady of Angels Parish Hall.

Mr. Mack, 86, died Sunday, July 17, at Good Samaritan Center in Hermiston from complications of Alzheimer's Disease.

The eldest of seven children, he was born Jan. 17, 1919, on a farm near Karlsruhe, N.D., to Catherine and Anton Mack . He began his education in a country school when he was 8 years old and finished his education at St. Peter and Paul's Catholic School in Karlsruhe when he was 13 so he could help his father on the 1,040 acre farm. He worked on the farm until he was 21 and was drafted into the Army.

He was inducted at Fort Snelling, Minn., June 6, 1942, completed basic training at Camp Walters, Texas, and then was sent to Camp Shelley and Camp Livingston, in Louisiana. During his second furlough home, he and Kathryn E. Bruner "Katie," became engaged.

He left for overseas duty with the 38th Infantry Division to the Pacific Theater in December 1943. He helped establish a beachhead in Bataan, Luzon in The Philippines and fought in Zigzag Pass. On Nov. 7, 1945, he received an honorable discharge at Fort Lewis, Wash., then returned to marry Katie at St. Peter and Paul Church, in Karlsruhe on Nov. 27,1945.

The couple farmed until October 1946 near Bantry, N.D. Unable to purchase farm equipment due to the shortages after World War II, they decided to move to Oregon. Mr. Mack's first job was picking cherries at Albany; he also worked at a prefab housing project, for a building contractor and for Chambers Saw Mill.

In May 1948, he became an apprentice meat cutter under the G.I. Bill, received his journeyman certification and practiced that trade for 33 years.

The Macks lived in Albany, Lebanon and Eugene before moving to Hermiston after his retirement in 1983.

Mr. Mack was said to be a hard-working, practical, independent man who put his family first. If there was a job to be done, he did it without complaint or ceremony.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Fabian.

Survivors include his children and their families, Karen and George Anderson, Beth Anderson, Sally and T.J. Anderson-Hansell, and Will Anderson; Gary and Janice Mack, Grant and Brittany; Arlen and Joie Mack, Lauren and Lindsay; and Todd and Minda and Christopher Mack; brothers, Lawrence, Anton and Daniel; and sisters, Barbara Goin and Margaret Keller.

Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association, Columbia/Willamette Chapter, 1311 N.W. 21st Ave., Portland OR 97209.
