Paul William Bernstein, youngest son of John Carl Bernstein and Magdalena nee Jeremias, resident of Serbin, died at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, 27 December 1869 and was buried the next day in St Paul's Cemetery, Serbin, Texas. Pastor Kilian gave a brief funeral devotion at the church, a blessing at the grave, and preached a funeral sermon on New Years' Day. The cause of death was weakness and he lived for one year and ten months.

The following obituary was originally written in Wendish by Pastor Jan Kilian; transliterated and translated into German by Martin Strauch; then translated into English by Jack Wiederhold, Texas Wendish Heritage Society:

In love we remember William Paul, the youngest son of John Carl Bernstein, and his wife, residents of Serbin, who the Lord called to Himself from this world last Monday at 8:30 in the morning, and we remember John Carl Bernstein, a resident of Serbin, who the Lord called from this world on the same day, last Monday evening at 10:00. Both bodies, the son and the father, were given Christian burial last Tuesday with a short devotion in the church and with graveside blessings. Yesterday the funeral sermon was delivered in their honor.

The child was born on 27 February 1868. His father was John Carl Bernstein who died on the same day as his son. His mother is Magdalena nee Jeremias from Trauschwitz. He was baptized: Paul William. He was weak after his birth and was recently sick again and passed away early last Monday at 8:30. He was one year and ten months old.

His father, John Carl Bernstein, was born on 8 May 1827. His deceased father was Christian Bernstein, a small farmer in Lehn near Hochkirch, his deceased mother was Maria Zieschang from Grosskunitz near Grosspostwitz. He was baptized: John Carl. In his childhood he was raised well and received a good education. After confirmation he worked until age 27 when he entered into holy matrimony with Magdalena Jeremias from Trauschwitz with whom he lived in a peaceful marriage for 14 years and with God’s blessing produced five children of which one son and one daughter preceded him in death. Two sons and one daughter are still living.

Concerning his last illness, he became sick in Brenham, was in bed for three weeks, had holy communion at home on 28 February, and left us last Monday evening at 10:00 at the age of 42 years, seven months, and 19 days.

May the Lord comfort his grieving widow; two sons, August Moritz and Ernest Isidor; a daughter, Clara Ernestina; two brothers in Europe, John and Andrew; five sisters, Magdalena, Anna, Maria, Agnes and Christiana in Europe; a grandma, the widow Maria Jeremias, on his mother’s side, also in Europe; and other friends near and far.

Thanks to John Dube and his wife Maria for all demonstrated help and love and for the transporting of the bodies, to Andrew Kunze and his wife Anna for demonstrated help and love, to John Pilak, Michael Kurio and Frederick Karcher for visits and demonstrated help and love; to Louise Dube for the preparation of the small body; and to both grave diggers, pallbearers and mourners.
