Visitation for Charles Howard "Tod" Cyrus, 90, of Greer, S.C., formerly of Watseka, will be from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Segur-Knapp Funeral Home, Watseka. A graveside service will follow at noon in Flesher Cemetery, Crescent City, with Joe Hughes officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Fourth Presbyterian Church, 703 E. Washington St., Greenville, SC 29601. He died Saturday (Oct. 4, 2008) at Greenville Memorial Hospital in Greenville, S.C.
Mr. Cyrus was a retired salesman for UARCO/Standard Register Company. He was born April 14, 1918, in Watseka, the son of John Howard and Cora Willoughby Cyrus. He graduated from Knox College with a degree in music education. From the age of 14, he was a professional musician. From the 1930s to the 1950s he played with a number of big bands in Chicago and New York. He also formed his own band, "Tod Howard and the Musicmakers." Tod was a member of the Greenville Symphony Orchestra under conductor Peter Rickett; the Greenville Community Band; and the Pat Throneburg Band. He was president of the Musicians Union in Kankakee, and Greenville, S.C. During the 1980s, Tod had his own radio show, "One More Time" on WGFA-AM/FM (Watseka) featuring classic big band music. He was a member of the Fourth Presbyterian Church and a participant in the church choir. He was also an active member of Greenville Kiwanis and Elks Clubs.
Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Jane and John Lippard of Travelers Rest, S.C., Debra and William Sanders of Greenville; one son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Elizabeth Cyrus of Taylors, S.C.; one sister, Virginia Quick of Greer; three stepdaughters, Nancy Tracy of St. Paul, Minn., Martha Tolly and Becky Willimon, both of Greenville; one stepson, C.E. McBride of Kansas, Mo.; two grandchildren, Tipton Charles Hudson and Amy Forrester, one great-grandson, Andrew Forrester; and seven stepgrandchildren, Kristopher Edwards, Joshua Edwards, Bryan Willimon, Mary Ann Tracy, Patrick Tracy, Sam Tracy and Zane Hardeman. Also surviving are one sister-in-law, Helen Bradish of Tinley Park; four nieces, Susan Bradish of Tinley Park, Nancy O'Driscoll of Erie, Colo., Holly Zeeb of Newtonville, Mass., and Cathy Clark of Woolwich, Maine; and three nephews, Joseph Quick of Newberry, S.C., David Quick of Pickens, S.C., and John Quick of Crystal Lake.
Mr. Cyrus was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Frances Jane Caveney Cyrus; second wife, Dorothy Metz Cyrus; and by a daughter, Andrea Cyrus Boven.
