The First Bishop of the Diocese of Sosnowiec, Monsignor Adam Smigielski SDB., was born on December 24, 1933, in Przemysl, within the district of Zasanie, Poland, the eighth child born to a professional officer and his wife, who had previously studied economics in Austria.

Obtaining his studies at the primary school of Przemysl and later at the local secondary school, Adam joined the Salesians of Saint John Bosco at the age of 18, and was ordained to the priesthood on June 30, 1957, by Bishop Piotr Kalwa, after undergoing studies in Krakow and Lublin.

Superior of the Seminary of Krakow, prefect of the Salesian Fathers, instructor of letters and Biblical languages for Salesian students, prefect of studies of the Seminarium Salesianum Duchownym Towarzystwa, secretary and later panel member of the Polish episcopate, Smigielski underwent doctoral studies in the Academy of Catholic Theology in Warsaw between 1969 and 1971, and later at the Biblical Institute of Rome and at the L'Ecole Biblique of Jerusalem. The Polish Communist Government refused issue a passport for him until 1971, when he finally received it after 18 rejections.

Named rector of the ecclesiastical superior for Salesian Seminaries, Smigielski served furthermore as provincial inspector of the Salesians in Wroclaw, until his appointment as the First Bishop of the Diocese of Sosnowiec by Pope John Paul II, following its erection on March 25, 1992.

Smigielski received his episcopal consecration on the following May 30, from Cardinal Józef Glemp, assisted by Archbishop Stanislaw Nowak and Cardinal Franciszek Macharski. He died of cancer while still in Office, after sixteen years of episcopate, on Tuesday, October 7, 2008, aged 74, at the Szpitalu Specjalistycznym Nr. 5 of Sosnowiec.
