The daughter of Everett Douglas and Emma Jackel McCulloch. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Berniece Christiansen. Evelyn is the great-granddaughter of Samuel McCulloch, the first Texan casualty in the War for Texas Independence, and she is the great-great granddaughter of Jonathan Vess, one of the original Austin Colonists. Evelyn was a resident of San Antonio for 49 years, moving to Shiner when she and her husband retired in 1975, and she spent the last years of her life in Spring, Texas. Her life was graced with forty-four grandchildren and one hundred and seventeen great-grandchildren and four children yet to be born. Those she leaves behind will most remember her for her love of God and family, and her lifelong passion for books and learning. A 1930 graduate of Our Lady of the Lake College in San Antonio, Evelyn Elder taught for 26 years in the San Antonio Independent School District. She was known for bringing her Spanish-speaking first graders to fluency in English by the end of the first semester.

Evelyn was a resident of San Antonio for 49 years, moving to Shiner when she and her husband retired in 1975, and she spent the last years of her life in Spring.

Survivors include one son and six daughters, Mrs. Johnine (Paul) Leininger, Mrs. Phyllis Anne (Walter, deceased) McAndrew, Mr. John D. (Gay) Elder Jr., Mrs. Patsy (Barton) Bradicich, Mrs. Judy (Bill) Parsons, Mrs. Karen (Guy) McClung, and Mrs. Susan (Thomas) Kosh. She was blessed with 44 grandchildren and 117 great-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren yet to be born and her first great-great-grandchild yet to be born. Those she leaves behind will most remember her for her love of God and family, and her lifelong passion for books and learning.

The rosary will be Sunday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. at Buffington Funeral Home in Shiner. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Shiner, on Monday, Oct. 20, at 10 a.m.

Grandsons serving as pallbearers will be Paul Leininger Jr., Matthew McAndrew, John Elder III, Luke Bradicich, Guy McClung IV, and Michael Kosh.

Interment will follow at San Fernando Cemetery No. 2 in San Antonio at 2 p.m.
