DYERSVILLE, Iowa -- James R. Drees, 84, of Dyersville, died Thursday, Oct. 23, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center-Dyersville, after a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Oct. 27, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville; with the Rev. Phil Kruse and the Rev. John O'Connor concelebrating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where a parish scripture service will be at 2 p.m.

He was born on Feb. 18, 1924, in Dyersville, son of Fred and Nellie (Krapfl) Drees.

He married Mary Ann Gerken on June 9, 1948, in Dyersville. Together they farmed west of Dyersville until retiring in 2000.

He was a lifelong member of St. Francis Xavier Parish.

Jim enjoyed many sports. In his youth, he pitched for the Dyersville Flyers. Fishing and bowling became some of his favorite pastimes. He was very devoted to his family and enjoyed spending time with his children and playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Ann; children, Dennis (Deb), of Iowa City, Daniel (Mary), of Durango, Debra (Norb) McClimon, of Dyersville, Darrell (Cheri), of Petaluma, Calif., Darla (Rick) Budden, of Petersburg, Diane Drees of Dyersville, Dawn (Gary) Olberding, of Dyersville, and Delynn (Dave) Fangman, of Asbury; a special niece, Sr. Lynn Marie Fangman, PBVM, of Dubuque; 19 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Charles, of Edina, Minn., and David (Janet), of Overland Park, Kan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son in infancy; and a sister-in-law, Lee Drees.
