In 1878, Hermann graduated from teacher's seminary in Addison, Illinois and began his teaching in Woodward, Illinois. This was followed by teaching assignments in Martinsville, NY, Bergholz, NY, and Reserve, NY. After first wife Pauline Dornfeld died in 1886, Hermann married Katharine Weinbach who may have been born in Sebringville, Ontario, Canada. Katharine was the daughter of Pastor J. W. Weinbach and his wife Elisabeth. He was the pastor at Holy Ghost Lutheran Church in Bergholz. In 1887, Herman and Katharine headed west to Saginaw, Michigan to teach at Holy Cross Lutheran School for the next 35 years, before moving to Detroit. His funeral was conducted at St. Stephen's Evangelical Lutheran Church on November 21, 1925
