Jay Sterling Gottstein, 80, of Leawood, Kan., passed away Tuesday, November 20, 2007, at his home. Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, at The Louis Memorial Chapel, 6830 Troost Avenue. Burial at Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Kindly omit flowers, the family suggests contributions to City of Hope, 1500 E. Duarte Rd., Duarte, CA 91010; National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 5442 Martway, Mission, KS 66205 or to Beth Shalom Synagogue.

Jay was born in Salt Lake City, Utah to Arthur and Jeannette Gottstein. As a young man, like so many young men of that day, Jay left high school early to join the U.S. Navy. He served on a destroyer in the Pacific. After serving, he went on to graduate from the University of Utah in 1953 as a Metallurgical Engineer. Jay worked for 41 years as the Production Manager for ASARCO, The American Smelting and Refining Company, retiring in 1988.

He was an exceptional man with high ethical values and integrity. He was a shining star from America's "Greatest Generation." Jay was the eternal optimist, very witty, sharp and extremely smart. "The life of the party wherever he went." Jay was an avid golfer and played on two senior men's golf leagues. He had four holes-in-one. He was a member of Beth Shalom Synagogue, City of Hope and the Ararat Temple of Shriner's.

Jay was preceded in death by his former wife, Barbara Gottstein, in 1982. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Gottstein, of the home; daughter, Jayna Gottstein, Fremont, Calif.; daughter and son-in- law, Jill and Terry Keithline and grandson, Brian Jay Keithline, Des Moines, Iowa; son and daughter-in-law, Gregory and Tina Gottstein, El Cerrito, Calif. He is also survived by brother and sister-in- law, Gordon and Mary Ann Gottstein, Bellevue, Wash. Also surviving are his step-daughter and her husband, Sheryl and Kevin Jordan and stepgrandchildren, Kevin Schwab, Breean and Loren Ginden; and great-grandson, Asher Ginden, all of Overland Park, Kan.; nephews, John, David and Grahm Gottstein and niece, Alison Gottstein.
