Erik Nilsson was the name he used in the US from 1881, his emigration out of Skien, Norway, until sometime after his first child, Ida Kornelia Nilsson, was born in 1894.
It is said he changed his name, to add the street name he was born and lived on in Skien, to Sanvik, because there were too many Nilssons getting his mail.
Erik was married in 1886, and his first wife and two infants all died of TB and are buried at W. St. Olaf Lutheran Church. Erik first lived with his paternal Aunt Karen Pedersdatter, wife of Aslak Paulson Boe, in Dodge County for 5 years prior to marrying the first time.
Erik had one daughter, Alma, born to Anna Svardal and Erik. Anna married someone else, and Alma was raised by Betsy Svardal, Anna's only sibling. Erik returned to Norway.
When Erik came back to Dodge County, 1893, he married my g.grandmother, Barbara B. Eidem in December.
Erik and Barbara had 8 children, all of whom lived to be senior citizens, and all lived in or within 20 minutes of the farm they were raised on in Dodge County, MN.
Erik was a good farmer, quiet, and a serious man. He lived to 80 years, dying the day after new years of cancer, at his home. He is buried at S. Zumbro Lutheran Church, with his wife Barbara and only unmarried child, Bennie, buried next to him.
Erik had 18 grandchildren.
