Vernon W. Heppe, 83, of Orleans, passed away Friday, April 30, 2004. He was born Nov. 7, 1920, in Orleans Township, the son of Henry and Elizabeth Schramm Heppe. He married Kathleen M. Hatinger on Aug. 2, 1947, and together they shared 56 years of marriage.
Mr. Heppe was a farmer all of his life in Orleans Township, and also worked at General Tire for more than 40 years. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the 7th Division, 184th Infantry Regiment Company G.
He was awarded the Silver and Bronze Star, the Purple Heart with three oak clusters, the Asiatic Pacfic Ribbon with four battle stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two battle stars, Combat Infantryman Badge, Good Conduct Medal, Expert Marsman Medal and four overseas service bars. He also was a member of the Sheridan Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) Post 5065.
He was preceded in death by his parents and baby brother, Adam.
He is survved by his wife; three children, Carol and Richard Dees of Okeana, Ohio, Gerald Heppe and Fince' Karen Pieron of Orleans, and Jayne and Jeff Johnson of Ionia; five grandchildren, Jennifer and Michael Heppe of Atlanta, Ga., Emily Johnson of Ionia, Jason Dees and Kathleen Dees of Okeana, Ohio; on great-grandson, Perry Heppe of Atlanta, Ga.; brothers, Harvey and Gertude Heppe and Robert and Lucille Heppe all of Orleans; sister, Katherine and Steve Kenter of Orleans and Mildred Hartman of Ionia; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are 11 a.m. Monday at Shiloh Community Church, with the Rev. Kenneth Harger officiating. Interment follows at Higbee Cemetery, Orleans Township, with military graveside honors provided by the Sheridan VFW Post.
The family will receive friends at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, 220 Rich St., Ionia, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the VFW National Home for Children or to the American Heart Association in memory of Vernon W. Heppe.
