Emily (Herrmann) Sturrock was a licensed foster mother in Jersey City for 40 years and fostered over 150 children. She retired in 1977.
She started out as a babysitter and then because of her love for children she got her license from the state. She took in all types of children, different races as well as handicapped, mentally challenged and deaf children. She took in children nobody else wanted. They didn’t think of her as a foster mother, they used to call her “mom.”
As a member of the Manalapan Seniors, she would knit blankets for children in the community for Christmas and their birthdays.
