Services were held at St. John's Lutheran Church in Bennington on Monday, October 17, for John H. Schmidt, 79, who died October 13, 1983, at his home. Dr. Norman Schroeder officiated. Burial was in the Elk City Cemetery.

John H. Schmidt was born to Henry and Marie Meyer Schmidt on July 14, 1904, on a farm near Bennington. He was baptized October 9, 1904, and confirmed his faith at St. John's Lutheran Church March 28, 1920.

After his education, he left home to work on the Magee farm.
On October 19, 1938, he married Rose Helen Lamp. They moved to the Leonard Mangold farm east of Bennington in 1942. He lived there until May, 1981, when he moved to Bennington.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose, who died September 9, 1971; his parents; a brother, Dietrick; and a sister, Anna.

He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Norma and Don Vasek of Yutan; and one son and daughter-in-law, Robert John and Donna Schmidt. Three grandsons, Scott, Mike and Patrick Schmidt; two brothers, Otto Schmidt of Arlington and Arnold Schmidt of Bennington; one sister, Martha Wiese of Elkhorn; many nieces and nephews; other relatives; and friends also survive him.

Verna Kneip was organist. Joyce Johnson was soloist.
Casket bearers were Arlan Schmidt, Gerald Schmidt, LaVern Schmidt, Robert Wiese, Larry Hadan and Melvin Schmidt.
