Son of Theodore and Sophia (nee' Oehlker) Gravenhorst
Theodore was a lawyer. He died in Germany February 17, 1893, 87 years old.
Adelbert immigrated to America, living in Chicago, Illinois before moving Teutopolis, Effingham County, Illinois in 1860. In 1864, he enlisted in the Civil War in Kendallville, Indiana, Company F, One Hundred and Forty-second Indiana Infantry. He participated in the battle at Nashville, Tennessee. On July, 1865, he was honorably discharged. He resumed farming until 1867 when he moved to Effingham, Illinois where he married Barbara (nee' Blattner) on January 3rd, 1871.
Occupation: Farmer
In 1878 he founded the German paper, the Effingham Volksblatt, as owner and editor
Adelbert and Barbara had 7 children, losing two in infancy. Surving were Theodore S., John, Charles, Ida and Albert.
Mr. Gravenhorst was a staunch Democrat, serving two terms as a member of the City Council of Effingham. He also served as an Aldermen, Chief of the Fire Department, President of the Washington Loan and Building Association. company.
His family were members of the Lutheran Church.
