UNION TWP. TRUSTEE KILLS SELF WITH GUN
Howard W. Mauller, 56, Commits Suicide Early Tuesday

DECATUR, Dec. 1 - Despondency over ill health was blamed for the suicide early Tuesday morning of Howard W. Mauller, 56, trustee of Union township, and a prominent farmer, whose lifeless body was found in the rear seat of an automobile in the barn of Ed Moses, a neighbor.
Mr. Mauller had risen about 6 o'clock and after doing some chores went to the Moses farm, where he took his own life by placing the muzzle of a .22 caliber rifle in his mouth and pulling the trigger. He had been in poor health for more than a year.
The suicide victim was a lifelong resident of Adams county, the son of David and Mary Cramer-Mauller. He was a rural mail carrier out of the Decatur post office for eight years and in 1934 was elected township trustee. In the race for the Democratic renomination in May, he ended in a tie with Gerhard Reinking, and the latter won on the toss of a coin after a recount had left the two still tied.
Surviving besides the widow, are two daughters, Faye and Mae, both at home; one son, Glen, of Decatur; the mother, Mrs. Mary Brinker, Pleasant Mills; one brother, Albert Mauller, Pleasant Mills; and two sisters, Mrs. William Allfather and Mrs. George Hill, both of Decatur.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. today at the home, four miles east of Decatur, and at 1:30 o'clock at the Calvary Evangelical church. Burial was in the East Salem cemetery.
